The LINKS Project
The National Children's Bureau was funded by The National Lottery Community Fund to support other organisations working with children and young people under the Empowering Young People’s Programme, which ended in 2024 and gave young people in Northern Ireland aged 8-25 the ability to cope with challenges in their lives.
An integral part of LINKS was the creation of a six-month paid internship for a young person to coordinate this work at NCB, with a total of five interns taking part over the course of the programme.
About the Internship
The Trainee Project Assistant role was an internship that provided the role holder with some valuable work experience in a children’s charity. The internships were for a 6 month period on a part time basis.
"I enjoyed my job, I felt included in the team and I was given experiences which I would not have otherwise had such as meeting other organisations, Outcome Based Accountability training and a complete immersion into the world of charities and voluntary work. NCB is a wonderful organisation, full of friendly and hard-working people, and I was grateful to be part of it."
Cara
“The main work I was involved with is supporting the LINKS project, which is a National Lottery Community Fund project, and involved assisting many different charities across Northern Ireland who have received grants. This was my favourite part of my role, as it has opened my eyes to the great work across the region. Before I started working at NCB, I had no idea how much life-changing work really goes on in the voluntary sector, and it has given me great hope for the future and made me excited for what lies ahead. I enjoyed every minute of my experience at NCB!”
Colette
“During my time at NCB I learnt more than I ever expected to about the world of work and about myself. My internship allowed me to gain valuable skills such as undertaking event planning, LINKS project reviews, involvement in the Young Persons Advisory Group, administrative skills…the list could go on! The experiences were only made possible through the support and learning from the amazing NCB team.”
