Youth Endowment Fund diversion review
Youth diversion programmes redirect children and young people who have committed offences from the formal criminal justice system to alternative community-based approaches. These programmes are critical as effective support can change children’s lives.
On behalf of the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF), NCB have conducted a systematic review of existing research on diversion to develop insights on how to implement youth diversion strategies effectively and support YEF’s efforts to promote change.
The evidence review has supported the YEF’s guidance report, summarising the best available evidence on youth diversion. The report outlines the priorities YEF will focus on, to ensure that diversion programmes are improved and that more children avoid the criminal justice system.

Youth Endowment Fund Toolkit
NCB is YEF’s Toolkit Evidence and Synthesis Partner (2024-2026), working alongside our partners from the Race Equality Foundation (a national charity tackling racial inequality) and researchers led by Professor James Thomas at the Evidence for Policy & Practice Information Centre (EPPI Centre) based at UCL.
The work will help ensure that what works for preventing youth violence remains underpinned by the best available evidence and considers Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Equality (EDIE) throughout.
