Safeguarding children

Every child should grow up safe, secure and supported, but many don’t.

As the world around them becomes more complex and interconnected, children face new threats to their safety and professionals must find innovative ways of working together to offer them help. National policy and local delivery must provide an integrated response to children’s needs if it is to strengthen families and keep children safe.

With the government embarking on major reforms to the child protection system, NCB is bringing the voices of children to the heart of Government, uniting people and organisations to deliver a safer and happier childhood for every child.

Through family member Research in Practice, we also equip professionals working with adults, families and communities with the knowledge and skills to work effectively in multi-agency safeguarding partnerships. Find out more about Research in Practice and its work in this area.

If you would like to explore how NCB can support you to develop your approach to safeguarding please contact our team [email protected].

  • National Government action

NCB’s research, expertise and partnerships give us authority and credibility with policy makers, enabling us to influence legislation at the highest levels on behalf of children and young people.

    More
  • Supporting local systems to protect children

With so much responsibility for safeguarding delegated to local agencies, we’ve been instrumental in work with them on innovative new ways of organising child protection services and thinking about risk.

    More
  • Ensuring the voices of those with lived experience are heard

By listening to children and young people continually build a compelling case for change. NCB facilitates numerous groups of 'experts by experience' including those who have direct experience of being supported by children’s social care services.

    More
  • Understanding the impact of maltreatment

Through pioneering work using large-scale linked data sets, we investigate the needs of children and young people based on individual records of how they have been supported by different services and how this has affected their outcomes.

    More
  • Domestic violence and abuse in local child safeguarding policy

A member of NCB’s Research and Impact Team, and one of our 'Experts by Experience' co-authored a paper focusing on domestic violence and abuse in local child safeguarding policy.

    More
  • Preventing and responding to sexual and sexist bullying

The Anti-Bullying Alliance, part of the NCB family, has developed a guide on prevention and response to sexual and sexist bullying.

    More
  • Safeguarding Early Adopters

Working with local areas to support the national implementation of effective multi-agency safeguarding arrangements.

    More
  • Our people

A number of NCB staff have in-depth experience in improving safeguarding practices and policy.
