With so much responsibility for safeguarding delegated to local agencies, we’ve been instrumental in work with them on innovative new ways of organising child protection services and thinking about risk.
- Safeguarding Early Adopters Programme - the Safeguarding Early Adopter Programme, a cross-government initiative, brought together 17 projects across the country to develop new and innovative approaches to new safeguarding arrangements. NCB facilitated the programme, supporting areas to explore opportunities, overcome implementation challenges and disseminate key lessons that were identified. The central message from the report for safeguarding partners across England is that the transition to the new legal should be seen as just the beginning of a transformative journey towards arrangements which are increasingly efficient, equitable, responsive and dynamic.
- Toxic Trio - In 2020, NCB carried out research, in partnership with the Universities of Cambridge and Kent, into the combined effect of the so-called 'toxic trio'. The toxic trio - parental mental illness, drug or alcohol misuse, and domestic violence – are known to be significant, individual indicators of children being in danger of harm or abuse. This systematic review of existing research suggests there is very little understanding of how, and indeed if, they combine to significantly increase the danger to children.
