These resources explore key learning for supported accommodation providers working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking (UAS) young people.
In March 2023, there were 83,840 children looked after in England, with 7,290 of these being unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people. Over half of these UAS children and young people (61%) were placed in supported accommodation (Children looked after in England statistics – Gov.uk, 2023).
As the provider of the Department for Education funded Sector Awareness and Provider Preparedness programme for providers of supported accommodation, the National Children’s Bureau developed these learning examples to share good practice.
A call was put out to the supported accommodation sector to understand the barriers and enablers in providing effective, high-quality support to unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people. Interviews were held with a variety of providers who currently work with this cohort of young people and have been supplemented by sector intelligence gathered throughout.
