NCB statement on the abolition of NHS England

NCB plays a critical role in supporting the children’s sector to engage in health policy, and works with and alongside NHS England to improve outcomes for children and families.

We recognise the Prime Minister's desire to reduce duplication and increase the responsiveness of the NHS. Nevertheless, it is critical we do not lose sight of the diverse but essential functions that NHS England carries out for children and families. These include everything from major transformation programmes for children’s mental health and maternity services, national clinical leadership for child health, to supporting the professional development of social workers working in mental health settings.

Before the government embarks on this major reorganisation, it is essential they have a clear vision of the future operating model for the NHS and, in particular, how DHSC will drive and sustain the transformation of children's health services across a fragmented system. To deal with the challenges identified by the Darzi Investigation, it is critical that local systems have sufficient oversight and accountability for turning the dial on child health outcomes. NCB will be seeking assurances that there is sufficient operational expertise and staffing in DHSC to understand and oversee transformation of a health system that meets the needs of children.

Above all, the government must do its utmost to ensure this upheaval does not undermine the health services that many children and families rely on. It is essential to safeguard any progress made in improving children's health and continue to prioritise their needs during this transition.

Our thoughts are also with the many expert and committed NHS England staff who now face an uncertain future.
