King's Speech: Despite the clamour, government must maintain its focus on the needs of families and children

At a time of considerable uncertainty within government, it is vital to recognise that several of the legislative measures outlined by the King today are fundamental to the welfare and wellbeing of children, young people and families.

In particular, proposals to reform the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system must press on, fully reflecting the breadth of insights gathered through extensive consultation and engagement events. Any changes must command and retain the confidence of children, families and the professionals who support them.

Likewise, planned NHS reforms come at a moment when local Integrated Care Boards are making significant spending reductions. This disconnect presents a serious risk to the continuity and quality of support available to the children and families who rely on these services. The government’s plans for reforming the NHS must be implemented in a way that minimises the very real risks for families and children, for example through clearer prioritisation in planning and monitoring.

We will only have healthier adults if we better prioritise children’s health.
