I recently had an amazing experience in London at a roundtable with the Minister for Early Education, Mr Stephen Morgan. The roundtable focused on issues in the education system such as school attendance, accessibility, behaviour management and the general idea of thriving in school. I did this as part of the broader advocacy efforts of the Young NCB Advisory Group, which I have been part of for the past year.
At the roundtable, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts and ideas, specifically on the topic of what it means to thrive in education which felt very empowering. It was really great to meet other students and hear them talk about their experiences around issues such as bullying, accessibility, and mental health.
I talked about the need for educational settings to take into consideration the diverse needs of students. I shared my experience of being profoundly deaf and how having the right support in high school has had a very positive impact on my education journey.
The Minister was really engaging and listened to everything said. He asked questions about our experiences and expectations. He concluded the meeting reaffirming his personal commitment to help children and young people thrive. I hope that our advocacy work has a positive impact, and it is reflected in future policies.
