Working with local parents in five areas of England, the A Better Start partnerships have developed and tested ways to improve their children’s diet and nutrition, social and emotional development, and speech, language, and communication. The work of this programme is grounded in scientific evidence and research.
A Better Start is place-based and focused on enabling systems change, aiming to improve the way that organisations work together and with families to shift attitudes and spending towards preventing problems that can start in early life.
The impact of that change is being monitored and assessed by the A Better Start national evaluation team, which includes NCB family member Research in Practice and is led by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen).
One area of systems change that NCB specialises in is applying our evidence-based approach to influencing policy at the highest level and we are sharing important insights and making policy recommendations from the A Better Start programme with policymakers and parliamentarians to inform present and future government priorities.
