Home Learning Navigator aims to improve learning support for children and families experiencing homelessness

The National Children's Bureau (NCB) has secured important funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), through their Research and Development Missions Accelerator Programme (R&D MAP). The investment will enable NCB to develop the Home Learning Navigator.

Children experiencing homelessness often face significant barriers to learning and development, including overcrowded temporary accommodation, disrupted routines and limited access to learning resources and support.

The Home Learning Navigator will bring together research evidence, practice knowledge and local support information in a new digital platform. It aims to help professionals across education, housing, health and children's services identify needs, explore evidence-informed approaches and coordinate support for children and families experiencing homelessness.

NCB will work with academic experts and sector partners to develop and test a prototype digital platform, providing a foundation for wider implementation.

Our academic experts include:

  • Professor Howard White from The Research and Evaluation Centre
  • Professor Suzanne Fitzpatrick and Dr Lynne McMordie from Herriot-Watt University
  • Professor Victoria Simms from Loughborough University.

Children experiencing homelessness face enormous challenges that can affect their opportunities to learn, play and thrive. While there is valuable research and practice knowledge available, it isn't always easy for professionals to access or translate this into coordinated support. We're really excited to have this opportunity to bring that evidence together in a practical way, working with local partners to develop something that could make a real difference to how children and families are supported.

About the Funder

The Home Learning Navigator is funded by the Research and Development Missions Accelerator Programme (R&D MAP), delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) as part of the Opportunity Mission. R&D MAP is investing at least £500 million by 2030 in research and development to tackle major problems facing society and the economy.

The programme’s Opportunity Mission focuses on ensuring that every child and young person in the UK can succeed, regardless of their background. It aims to raise school standards, improve the quality of education, and strengthen support for families.
