During 2023-24, the West Sussex Knife Intervention Project (KIP) provided early intervention and support to young people aged 10-25 who were identified as being at risk of carrying knives and committing serious violence. Packages of support delivered through the KIP consist of procurement of a diversionary activity for the young person or peer group, alongside the delivery of preventative educational content.

In autumn 2023, the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) was commissioned to undertake a process and impact evaluation of the KIP.

The aims were to:

  • Understand the barriers, enablers, strengths, and limitations of the group-based work provided through the KIP;
  • Evidence the short-term outcomes of the project; and
  • provide recommendations its future delivery and evaluation.
