The Department for Education (DfE) set up a pilot project with eight local authorities in early autumn 2015, designed to explore ways of providing Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) progress checks to children aged two who were not accessing formal childcare.
The aims of the pilot were to investigate:
- How to identify and engage with parents of relevant children to offer the progress check
- How to test out different ways of carrying out the progress check
- How to provide targeted support for any development needs identified
- Whether the pilot will have any impact on the take-up of formal childcare.
At the same time, we were commissioned by the DfE to carry out exploratory research to provide early learning from the pilot.
We will use qualitative methods including interviews with practitioners and parents, as well as workshops with practitioners.
Our findings will be available in a final report coming soon, published by DfE.
