Following the Making it REAL project, we have produced a set of four leaflets to help parents to support their children's learning.
Each leaflet covers one of the four strands of literacy: Environmental Print, Early Writing, Oral Language and Books.
Buy the complete set here. You can also bulk order (50 copies) each of the four individual titles.
A teacher and bilingual family support worker discuss the impact of the REAL project home visits as they visit Luqman and his mum and reflect on their experience. They look through Luqman’s scrapbook, read the Gruffalo, record animal noises and make simple puppets. Luqman’s mum gives her feedback on the project.
These posters were designed during the original Sheffield REAL project and can be photocopied and shared with parents.
The four jigsaws based on the work of Cathy Nutbrown and Peter Hannon, set out the many small steps in attitude, skills, concepts and understanding that children take in each of the four strands of literacy.
Blank spaces are included to record other things parents have noticed.

Digital Literacy and Numeracy
Parents, teachers and practitioners in Peterborough and Sandwell participated in workshops, led by ECU, to discuss the use of digital technology in the early years.
The full report Digital literacy and numeracy – the views of parents and practitioners is available here:
The report includes the questions and structure used for the workshops to enable replication in other nurseries and schools.
