April 2011

Guest Speaker Session

The DIANI project are very pleased to announce that Patrick Vernon, CEO of the Afiya Trust, one of the leading race equality health charities in the UK, will be our guest speaker on Wednesday 13th April 2011, 3.30pm at NCB NI, Albany House, 73-75 Great Victoria Street, Belfast, BT2 7AF.

Patrick will talk about the work of the Afiya Trust, who aim to reduce inequalities in health and social care for racialised groups. On 2nd March 2011 the Afiya trust held a one day conference on mental health and emotional well being. The event brought together speakers from the Department of Health (DoH), Rethink, Strategic Social Marketing and the Dost Project, many of whom discussed the need for early intervention and a call for united thinking and partnership.

In particular it highlighted that there was insufficient information on BME young people to make them visible on the health agenda. For example 20 per cent of children and young people have mental health problems but it was unclear as to how many were of BME origin.

If you would like to attend to hear Patrick talk about the work of the Afiya Trust and the difficulties faced by young people and adults from minority ethnic groups in accessing health and social care, please contact the DIANI project manager Fiona Milligan at fmilligan@ncb.org.uk or on 02890 891737.

Refreshments will be provided

DIANI Seminars

The DIANI project recently ran a series of practice sharing seminars for practitioners working with ethnically diverse children and young people.  With very positive feedback from the 60 plus people who attended the seminars, we will be running these again in the future.  Below are the seminar titles and brief description of the content of each session.

December 2010

Cultural Competence - What is it and how do we achieve it?  Cultural Competence refers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures.  We will also cover tips on how to support parents and children from ethnically diverse backgrounds in managing transition to life in Northern Ireland.

January 2011

Myth Busting - This seminar looks at dispeling some of the myths about asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants in relation to entitlements to work, benifits and schooling.  We will particularly focus on how this impacts on children from these families and what support services are available for children and their families.

Feburary 2011

Who's Here? - In this session we look at the numbers of ethnically diverse people in Northern Ireland.  Particularly looking at the numbers of school age children who are registered as 'Newcomer' on the school census.
