Local Authority Charter

The EDCM Local Authority Charter is a set of commitments that local authorities can sign up to to show that they are committed to disabled children and their families.

The Charter is signed by Lead Members for Children’s Services (Local Councillors). The Charter only covers English local authorities, reflecting the differences in the UK nations following devolution.

Currently there are 92 local authorities signed up to the Local Authority Charter – this is over half of all local authorities in England!

However we need your help to build on this number! You can view whether your local authority has signed up here.

Once the Charter is signed, the local authority should have an implementation plan in place to deliver these commitments.

Charter for 2010

EDCM has recently published an updated version of the Local Authority Charter. This maintains the same commitments as previous charters but allows local authorities to commit to implementating the Charter commitments within 'one year of signing'. You can download the new Charter here

Take Action!

Contact your local authority to find out what they are doing about the Local Authority Charter. If your local authority has not yet signed up you can send them an email to encourage them to do so. If it has already signed up then find out if they have an implementation or delivery plan to put the Charter commitments into place.
