Going places!

Going places!During summer 2008 we asked disabled children and young people all over the country this question: 'What would better places to go and things to do look like for you?'

The top three things disabled children and young people said would make better play and leisure opportunities are:

    1. Better attitudes from staff, adults and other young people
“I don’t want to feel like a nuisance or somebody different. I just want to do everything that everybody else does”

    2. Better access to places, so that they can join in

“I can’t just say to my mum, ‘I’m going out now’ like a normal teenager. I have to say ‘I’m going out on Saturday’ so she can help me sort things out.”

    3. Better transport to get to places

“It doesn’t matter how good things are, if you can’t get there in the first place, what’s the point?”

Lots of children and young people said:

“You can find out what’s best for us by involving us”

We have produced several booklets from the responses, including a local campaign tool,  which can be downloaded. Or contact us and we will send you copies.

We fed the responses into a Government consultation on play provision in England.  You can find out more about the outcome of the consultation.
