Disabled Children and Health

Why campaign?

EDCM wants to see all disabled children get the health services they need.

Our campaign briefing 'Disabled Children and Health', launched in June 2009, highlights the failure of the NHS to meet even the basic needs of disabled children.

The report highlights a clear disparity between central government policy and local delivery and calls on the Department of Health and Primary Care Trusts to take action to improve health services for disabled children.

Mumsnet and EDCM Nappies Campaign

In April 2010, David Cameron visited Riven Vincent, a regular poster to Mumsnet, to discuss her concerns about restrictions placed on the number of nappies she received for her disabled child. At this meeting, David Cameron made a commitment that his Government would act to tackle NHS restrictions.

Some disabled children, as a result of their impairments, need to continue to use nappies throughout their childhood.  Although nappies should be supplied to meet individual children's needs, in reality PCTs in some areas respond to funding challenges by placing blanket restrictions on the supply of nappies to families, often providing only 3 or 4 a day.  This set number is often not sufficient to meet their child's needs.

As a result, Mumsnet has joined forces with Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) write to Mr Cameron to challenge him to deliver on his commitment.
