Play England calls for community action to help children
missing out on outdoor play
Play England, backed by the Free Time Consortium, is
re-launching the Love Outdoor Play
Campaign, which is calling on everyone to Love Outdoor
Play in whatever way they can. This could be as simple as taking
five minutes to map their local play space on Play England's
online
map, signing up to regularly give money, time or
skills to a local play project, or finding out about local - or
national - volunteering opportunities to help more children play
outside more often.
The Consortium is a group of 17 local and specialist
organisations working together to increase children and young
people's opportunities for play and recreation and has recently
secured funding from the Cabinet Office to increase social action
in support of children's play.
Children's happiness and well-being: Good Childhood Report
2012
The Children's Society has published its annual Good
Childhood Report. Over 30,000 children and young people aged eight
to 16 in the UK participated in the survey.
The Children's Society argues that there are six priorities needed
for a happy childhood. A supplementary report,Promoting Positive
Well-Being for Children, sets out how they should be adopted by
government and others as priorities when devising new policies that
impact on children's lives. Priorities include a `safe and suitable
home environment andlocal area, and `the opportunities to take part
in positive activitiesthat help them thrive'.
More play opportunities for children in
Scotland
The Scottish Government has announced a £3 million investment
that will mean increased free play opportunities for Scotland's
children. The money will see an expansion of a selected number of
Play Ranger models, which provide children with community based
play opportunities and the Grounds For Learning initiative to
improve school playgrounds. It will also be used to support
and develop staff across Scotland's play sector.
