Making Ourselves Heard
Ensuring Every Disabled Child's Right to be
Heard Becomes a Reality
Making Ourselves Heard is a project which aims to ensure the
active participation of disabled children and young people in all
decisions directly affecting them; in the development of their
local communities; in the strategic planning of services; and in
all aspects of the work of the Council for Disabled Children.
Key Aims of Making Ourselves Heard
Disabled children and young people are currently an invisible
group in society. The more complex their needs, the more
invisible they appear to become.
This project is about changing that, by mapping and publicising
the work of those who get it right; by giving disabled children and
young people direct access to government and policy makers and by
ensuring the voices of disabled young people, and their success
stories are heard.
This will be achieved by the development of a network of
disabled young people and organisations who support them to
participate in decisions about their lives; mapping and
disseminating good practice; developing a toolkit for use by those
aiming to improve standards in encouraging and sustaining the
participation of disabled children; the development of a series of
positive images of disability in childhood in partnership with
disabled children and young people; and promoting the inclusion of
disabled children and young people in organisations who have a role
in promoting the participation of all children and young
people.
