New book on therapy in residential child care a major contribution

Wednesday 16 September

NCB is pleased to announce the publication of Milieu-Therapy with Children, edited by Hans Kornerup, as a major contribution to the theory, policy and practice of planned environmental therapy for children and young people in residential care.

Shaped by some of the most influential psychologists and psychoanalysts in the field, past and present, including Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, John Bowlby and Daniel Stern, social pedagogy is becoming increasingly relevant to English residential treatment theory and practice. The Scandinavian contributors to this book share an excellent understanding of the English tradition of child care and readers across all professions will find it easy to follow and relevant to their work.

Jonathan Stanley, manager of the National Centre for Excellence in Residential Child Care (NCERCC) says, 'The well-developed theoretical base and practice presented in this book helps expand our appreciation of the importance and effectiveness of residential child care as 'therapy in and through the environment'. The authors show how we must continually re-evaluate practice, bringing forwards a heightened conscious level of reflection that informs the task we are arranging, organising, sharing and developing with young people.'
